Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit is a popular fruit, primarily grown for its fruit. The plant, known scientifically as Hylocereus undatus, belongs to the cactus family. Native to Mexico, Central America, and South America, dragon fruit is now widely cultivated in Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. There are three common types of dragon fruit on the market: white-fleshed, red-fleshed, and yellow-fleshed.
Taste and Nutrients in Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit is a beautiful fruit commonly used as a gift during holidays and festivals. It is popular for its delicious and refreshing taste. The fruit is rich in water and essential minerals that benefit the body. Additionally, it contains a wide range of nutrients.
For those on a weight-loss diet, dragon fruit is an excellent addition due to its high fiber content, which is good for digestion and liver health.
Moreover, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity should also consider including dragon fruit in their diet as it helps support overall health.
Red Dragon Fruit
Red dragon fruit, also known as the queen of dragon fruits, is called pink pitaya, pitahaya, or red flesh dragon fruit in English. This plant has the appearance of a cactus. The fruit has a vibrant, juicy, and delicious red-pink flesh.
Nutrients in Red Dragon Fruit
Red dragon fruit helps maintain beneficial bacteria in the digestive system, supporting the intestines’ health.
It also improves aging issues, giving women smoother skin, providing moisture, and reducing skin dryness and roughness.
People with diabetes or high cholesterol should consume red dragon fruit as it helps reduce blood cholesterol levels.
Red dragon fruit also provides beneficial plant compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, and betacyanins.
Price of Red Dragon Fruit at the End of 2022
Recently, exporters and traders have started purchasing ripe dragon fruit directly from local farms at higher prices.
After the lockdown period due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the community has entered a “new normal,” and many border gates have reopened, leading to improvements in the export of dragon fruit and other products.
Compared to about two years ago, by the end of this year, the price of red dragon fruit in Long An and Tien Giang has increased by more than 10,000 VND per kilogram. Farmers are pleased with the prices of red dragon fruit, which are as follows:
- Type 1: 23,000-27,000 VND/kg
- Type 2: 19,000-20,000 VND/kg
The end of the year is a peak demand period, and the export of dragon fruit is expected to rise in the near future. However, due to the challenging period during the pandemic, many farmers have uprooted old dragon fruit plants, leading to a limited supply. As a result, some traders have pushed the prices of red dragon fruit higher.

Export Challenges
The main market for Vietnamese dragon fruit remains China. This is a traditional market on which we are still dependent. The price of dragon fruit fluctuates significantly, making it difficult for businesses and farmers to adapt quickly.
The agricultural department, in collaboration with local authorities, has advised farmers not to cut down their dragon fruit plants. This is not an effective solution; instead, there is a need to reorganize production and diversify export markets.
In reality, the majority of export markets are facing difficulties, which has caused the price of red dragon fruit to drop significantly for an extended period. However, some exporters are still sending regular shipments of 5-8 tons to the European market, providing farmers with stable prices for red dragon fruit.
To maintain a stable price range of 15,000 – 18,000 VND per kilogram for dragon fruit weighing 250-350 grams, farmers need to follow the clean cultivation process, ensuring there are no pesticide residues. This is a requirement to meet the stringent standards of the European export market.
